Will Patrick Murphy reimburse taxpayers for the political use of Air Force Two?
Liberal politician Patrick Murphy campaigned with Vice-President Joe Biden yesterday, attending a fundraiser and lunching at a Miami restaurant where the two posed for selfies with Democrat party voters.
It is unclear who paid the cost of Joe Biden’s junket, as well as the security and logistics required to have the Vice-President of the United States transported more than 1,000 miles to attend a political fundraiser and campaign event.
“Taxpayers deserve to know if Patrick Murphy’s campaign covered the $110,000 fuel and operating costs of Joe Biden’s taxpayer funded private jet,” said Brian Burgess, spokesman for the Better Florida Alliance. “If he refuses to repay taxpayers, then it serves as a perfect example for how Washington insiders like Patrick Murphy fund their lavish lifestyles at the expense of working families.”
Recent operating cost estimates from the United States Air Force range from $22,000 per hour (multiple sources), to as high as $45,000 (according to an April 2013 report in Time Magazine).
So even with the most conservative estimate of $22,000 per flight hour, Patrick Murphy’s special guest’s five-hour round-trip flight cost taxpayers at least $110,000, and that’s just for the fuel and crew costs. The costs of security, hotels meals, and other travel incidentals is another matter entirely.
